On Second Thought A Novel Kristan Higgins 9780373789252 Books

I started reading this on the fortieth anniversary of my husband's death and just finished a while ago. At first I was somewhat put off by the beginning of Kate's story in the first chapter. However, knowing my Kristan wouldn't suddenly write something that would let me down (unless she was truly taken over by aliens) I persevered. Please believe me when I say this is one of Kristan's finest and most mature books and you will love it. Kate and her sister Ainsley's stories will take you through all the emotions, including plenty of LOLs. It's not a book for sissies. I'll be 70 in a couple of months and loved the stories of women who lost and then won in the world of love at about the age that I did not. I never found my "second thoght" but it was nice to read about two women who did. Thanks, Kristan. You made me smile, again.

On Second Thought A Novel Kristan Higgins 9780373789252 Books Reviews

I absolutely loved this book--- in fact I marathon read this in one day. I needed a book to read - read the reviews, decided to purchase the book on my kindle--the first paragraph I was settled in and ready to meet the characters. I love the way Kristan Higgins writes, I wish I could put my finger on why I love her writing rather then another authors writing . The flow of the characters and how they inter act ..along with their stories just get you from the beginning to the end. I laughed as well as cried, because the characters are so believable. I will be honest Daniel the "Hot Fireman" at first did not really fit into the story, but as I hung in there he then began to grow as a character. I love the way he was brought in and slowly he appeared. The sisters (half sisters) I absolutely loved, -Ainsley and Kate are wonderful - Kate had me laughing - Ainsley had my heart-- I hated Eric with a passion but understood where he was going when he had the "breakdown"- becoming a real bastard. Jonathan's personality slowly came out -- but I feel like I never understood where he was coming from. Bottom line I could not put the kindle down until I came to the end, then I went back to and just purchased another book-- "If You Only Knew" which I have started and it looks like I am going to marathon read today.
I think by far this has been my most favorite book from Kristan Higgins. I could not put it down or want to. It was so beautifully written.

Kate thought she had the perfect life until she needed that second glass of wine. Everything changed after that. Her husband of 4 months was dead. She thought she had a great life, finally after being single for so long. The two of them were trying to have a baby. But after Kate's husbands death, she finds out things about Nathan that she didn't want to find out and some things she did.

While Kate is grieving, her sister Ainsley moves in with her, and not by her choice mind you. Ainsley's boyfriend of 11 years decides he needs to find himself in Alaska and that she is holding him back. Ainsley realizes what everyone else has seen in her ex boyfriend that he is self-centered and wants her to do his bidding.

Can Kate find love, family, and peace after Nathan's untimely death? Can Ainsley move on from her ex and find love with that special someone?

I really, really enjoyed this book. It is by far one of the best of this year!! You laugh, you cry, you want to hit some of the characters, but in the end it all seems to work itself out.
This is Ms. Higgins second book set in Cambry-on-Hudson, again told in alternating first person voices as was If You Only Knew. Kate has been married a little over three months and is in her late thirties. She had given up on men and children when she met Nathan and married him in a whirlwind courtship.
Her half-sister Ainsley has been living with her significant other, Eric, for eleven years. They have gone through a battle with testicular cancer and Ainsley is hoping that Eric is finally going to give her the engagement ring that they've always talked about.
Instead, Nathan is killed in a freak accident, Eric dumps Ainsley, and she moves in with Kate. The two women must deal with their new circumstances and continue to live their lives amidst great sadness and change.
I liked both women very much. Kate is more reserved, happy in her career as a professional photographer while Ainsley is outgoing and friendly to everyone. They both are very "Real" in every sense of the word. Their actions and what they say is always perfect for the circumstances they find themselves and Kristin Higgins never goes over the top with what are very sensitive issues. Every character shines (even Madeleine) and I enjoyed every minute of this wonderful story.
