The Devil Web The Web Trilogy Mary Balogh 2015440243076 Books
A hard book to write. The hero is so tormented by a past affair and by a joyless, loveless upbringing that when he finally marries Madeleine he is unable to relate to her except with hostile and dictatorial pronouncements. Of interest are his thoughts of love towards her followed by his verbal abuse and guilt afterwards. Madeleine is also a very confused character, having been falling in and out of love constantly throughout the entire Web Series. Her strongest feelings are for the only man who is rough, dismissive and slightly abusive towards her. They both experience an amazingly strong attraction to each other.Although this is the hardest relationship of the trilogy, they of course, finally work it out. Considering the prior build up, it could have used a bit more transition into marital harmony at the end. Still it is a very different story than the usual.

The Devil Web The Web Trilogy Mary Balogh 2015440243076 Books Reviews
The third book of the 'Web' series. I enjoyed trails that were traveled in this book. I even cried I was so involved!
This is an excellent book with a deeply troubled hero and a painfully ambivalent heroine. The unhappy couple find a happy-ever-after but must go through years of torment, apart and together, to achieve it. James Purnell has suffered for years over a mistake he made, which he believes has destroyed the happiness of another. It ruined the relationship between himself and his father, who dies without reconciling with him. In the grief and guilt of the moment, he compromises and marries Madeline Raine, a vivacious society beauty who has loved him for years. But James knows so little about love that he can't trust it. And Madeline, hurt by James over and over, won't make herself vulnerable by revealing her true feelings. The misunderstandings between these people are both chronic and acute - they cause each other deep pain and grieve because they can't find the joy they desperately hope for. This is the third book in a trilogy, but can easily be read on its own.
What's not to love about a Mary Balogh novel? As usual, she never fails to make you fall in love with the characters she creates. Another Balogh triumph!
I so disagree with all the negative comments about this book. This was a story about a man with major problems. If you read the first book in the series, "The Gilded Web", you would know that, and this is a prime example why you should read the books in order. Of course, you don't have to, but you miss out on so much if you don't. Those of you who complained about all the secondary characters "interrupting" the story would have loved the information given about those characters. It was part of the big story - all three books in the series together. I liked James from the start and wished for his happiness just like his sister, Alex, did. They deserved it after the childhood they had. I have to admit it was a bit frustrating waiting for them to finally get together which I knew they eventually would, but you had to have all of that to make the story real. I felt so for James when he begged his father for his blessing and he wouldn't give it and again at his deathbed when he just wanted some kind of sign from him and nothing. I also felt for Madeline after they were married when she tried so hard to make things work and they just didn't. But I so hated it when she refused to see him so many times and then when he finally was able to explain, she still didn't take him back. I wanted to kick her!!! But the very best part of the story was the ending. It was perfect especially when they were all standing there holding each other's hands. Priceless! I just wish there was another brother or sister to write another book about so I could find out if the baby was a boy or girl and how Madeline returned to that house and hopefully got rid of Mr and Mrs Cockings - the horrible people! Again, I found this series one of the best and would recommend it highly!!!
these books by Mary Balogh were awesome English/London Historic day reads I wasn't sure at first if I would like her writing because I had never read anything of hers but the cover and storyline peaked my interest and I am glad I did indulge in them ... they have been very good books I think she has written quite a few ) this series the web of love, the devils web, the gilded web ..... ALL excellent reads..I especially Like her new series about the "Survivors club"
I loved this book. It demonstrates Mary Balogh's versatility. What a wonderfully dysfunctional
couple to read about. It was almost excruciating waiting to see if they would ever be open
enough with each other to work things out - but in a good, I've got to keep on reading, kind
of way. Great story! I loved it.
After 3 books and such a dysfunctional / unhealthy relationship with the hero and heroine fighting and throwing insults to one another, I just wished that Mrs Balogh could have given us a glimpse of how a good relationship between James and Madeleine might be. Just one additional chapter would do.
