Unfortunately I found a lot of advice that is against documented studies (stientiffic and clinical), that instead of raising EQ will lower EQ (punishments of all kind, shaming, treating your child badly).
If you are a little documented before reding this, you immediately see the "red signs" flashing. Just use a lot of sources for ducumentation and proven facts (by studies) and this book fails fails fails for the advices.
Author must be really really old and not documented.
I remember in the first 40 pages already he says that you don't always talk to the child or be understanding when he has a meltdown (exactly what would raise EQ, naming emotions and being there for them).
This book takes a loving, compassionate view of the psychology of emotion. This is combined with a parent's perspective on teaching, encouragement, and discipline. I found that it gave me great hope, as a new father. The general thrust of the book is to suggest that parents model good emotional behaviors, as children learn most from the actions of their parents, especially early on. There were also many good, practical suggestions of ways to positively impact a child's emotional development. I found that this even helped me in understanding my own emotions, as I saw ways that I'd been negatively impacted as a child and this enabled me to change my perspective in positive ways.
I haven't gotten through the whole book yet, but I've read quite a bit and he makes a lot of great points and gives a lot of great tricks to help your children work through their emotions. I have already started using it with my 3 year old and I feel a lot calmer knowing how to handle the situations. And on the plus side, the same principles apply to adults.
This book has a different look from many parenting books. A wide range of ages are looked at with many different practical examples and general guidelines.
I was very disappointed in the book, I was hoping for something that I could do on a one on one basis with my child/children not for a classroom setting. This book is really more for groups of 5 or more.
I'm always trying to learn ways to be a better parent. This book was tremendous!! I learned solid ways to help them make more friends (nice ones), found new ways to teach problem solving, tweaked my discipline plan, relieved some Mommy guilt... Then I realized I could use a bunch of this stuff too! The print is big and the words are short - I read the whole thing in one sitting. Everyone who reads this book will become a better parent and a better person.
Bought this for myself to see what I missed. Lol just kidding. It's a good book with good information that is practical and useful
