Crocodile on the Sandbank Amelia Peabody Book 1 Elizabeth Peters Books

It took me some time to get my head around this book. It's not like anything I've read previously. This mystery, set in 19th century Egypt, is a parody of Victorian manners and mores. Amelia Peabody, an enlightened and educated woman who favors trousers, sets out to tour the archaeological sites of Egypt. Along the way she picks up an impoverished and wronged fair British maiden, and they find themselves at the dig site of the Emerson brothers. Soon the whole group is facing trouble as a wandering mummy continues to disturb them. Figuring out the mystery of the mummy quickly becomes dangerous and threatens to derail the entire expedition.

To really enjoy this mystery it's essential to get into the parody. A reader expecting historical fiction will likely be disappointed. The mystery was not especially difficult to solve, but each of the characters is so caught up in his or her particular personality quirk that they are blinded to the clues around them. Victoria is the archetypal Victorian woman, Amelia is the feminist, Walter Emerson is the young man in love, and Radcliffe Emerson is the gruff scholar.

Crocodile on the Sandbank Amelia Peabody Book 1 Elizabeth Peters Books Reviews

As a rule I am not a reader of mysteries, but I read this book because of my interest in ancient Egypt and the world of the British Empire. Elizabeth Peters transports us to the world of late 19th century Egypt where we find General "China" Gordon battling the Muslim Mahdi at Khartoum and a young archaeologist named Flinders Petrie beginning his digs around Giza ( much like Agatha Christie showed us the interwar period at archaeological digs in Iraq in "Murder in Mesopotamia")
A very interesting setting and very well written
Elizabeth Peters creation Amelia Peabody us a delight, a bit of historical reference to set the scene then off on a rollicking ride through 1890's Egypt, shuddering less at ambulatory mummys than at the destruction visited to the area before sensible archeology was employed to save the ancient treasures of the world. Just enough history and archeology to paint the scene appropriately, then a good story with an excellent cast of characters that you cannot wait to hear from again. Be forewarned Dear Reader that the 21 book series was published not quite in chronological order, to ward off confusion or frustration, go to Wikipedia and find the chronological order to read the stories in, I found that much more satisfying.
This isn't a perfect book by any means but having been written in the 1970s, set in 1880, I was very pleasantly surprised!

I officially love the characters, Evelyn, Amelia, Walter and even Emerson. They are complex individuals and while sometimes I wanted to smack them, I have fallen in love with them! They have their faults but they are good people.

Amelia is the stubborn, kick-butt feminist set in the 1880s I didn't know I needed.

The plot is slow I guess but I enjoyed reading it. The writing flowed well to me and it was, exactly like it says, a cozy read. And as I got closer to the end I was enjoying trying to figure out the mystery and no, I didn't figure it out until it told me!

That ending! <3
This series has been my all-time favorite for years. I own all the books in paper format, and have re-read them so many times. Now that I have a , I'm accumulating the entire series on . (As my eyes age, I find the adjustable font and the light make it so much easier to read, and also the is lighter and easier to hold.) Amelia Peabody, the main character in this series, is a Victorian lady who is ahead of her time in her sense of independence, daring to do things that most women were intimidated by. In this first book, Amelia discovers Egypt for the first time, becomes enamored of Egyptology, and meets the irascible but admirable man who will become her husband and partner in archaeological research. The stage is set for the development of the story line across the rest of the series. To me, the most enjoyable characteristic of these books is that Amelia, although a very determined woman, has an excellent sense of humor.
What an engaging author! Her depictions of the characters are spot on. At times, writers can only sympathetically portray characters of their own sex. Not so with Elizabeth Peters, she is gifted in the art of exposing her characters personalities so well, that I feel as if I have personally become acquainted with them. I am amused at reading negative comments about some of the content not being politically correct. How sad to demean a heartfelt innocent book with pontifical bias I hope we are all adults and can handle these affronts to some people's perceived sensitivities. To me, the story line was incidental to my enjoyment of the skillful writing..I felt like I was watching a good old B&W 1940s movie. I will intersperse my reading of action, pot boiler, SF, horror, and literature (not so much) books with this author's work. I think she had fun writing it; I know I enjoyed reading it..
These are a great series of books. The are set in the Victorian era, written in the person of Amelia Peabody. Witty repartee between Emerson and Peabody. This is the first of the series. I have now read The Curse of the Pharaohs and The Mummy Case. The violence is truly negligible, but after all, they are murder mysteries. The sexual content is referred too charmingly. The Emerson family and their acquaintances are a bit off kilter, but so likable.
Great reading for anyone who is tired of all the graphic descriptions in books so many writers feel they need to sell books.
I intend to read Elizabeth Peters' other novels. She writes under her pen names Elizabeth Peters, Barbara Michaels ,and her real name - Barbara Mertz.
